Family-Friendly Facelift

Unlike the living rooms of the past, modern day living rooms are meant to be, well, lived in.  This often poses a challenge for modern families who desire form, function and fabulous all in one package.

I recently faced a similar challenge when my micro-suede living room suite had finally succumbed to the abuse it had endured from endless movie nights, birthday parties, gaming all-nighters and other atrocities typical of a family of four with a dog and cat!  Structurally in good condition, I decided to have a new slip-cover made and complete a family-friendly facelift of the living room in the process.  Here are some of my family-friendly discoveries:

  • Sunbrella!  Whilst I was familiar with Sunbrella fabrics and their application in outdoor furniture, I was oblivious to the fact that this innovative, stain resistant, water repellant, low maintenance fabric was also utilized indoors as well.  Anslie’s Uphostery has a great selection of colours; they created slipcovers for the couches that fit like a glove.
  • Leather is your friend – Real and faux leather are also fantastic, family-friendly furniture options as they are easy to clean and maintain.
  • Basket case – a selection of baskets to suit your décor will provide the necessary storage for that never-ending parade of toys.  When guests arrive, toys can quickly be dropped inside the basket and slipped into a corner providing a stylish and practical hideaway.
  • Serving trays – more for than just serving drinks, we keep a treasured tray on a side table to act as a ‘catch-all’ for the remote controls, tissue box, small toys, Sudoku book and pencils.
  • Indoor/outdoor rugs – wise manufacturers are now creating rugs capable of facing the elements (or your family) but still beautiful enough to grace your living room.  Surya has a vast selection of indoor/outdoor rugs and can be ordered through Furniture Walk.
  • Add a touch of whimsy! Whether it’s the children’s artwork in a frame or a funky textile, remember that your living room should be an exciting place to be.  In our space, a set of drapes surrounding the deep bay windows creates the perfect stage for our budding drama queen!
